The obverse field of the coin has been modified over time to reflect Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait.

One of the three effigies of Queen Elizabeth II could be found on the obverse side of the 1 oz British Britannia Gold coin. All coins from 1987 to 1997 feature the third generation Raphael MAKlouf portrait, which was first created in 1984.

The right-facing profile of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II was created by Ian Rank Broadley for coins that were issued from 1998 to 2015.

The fourth-generation image which features a new effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II was recently replaced in 2016. This portrait honours Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Jody Clark is the youngest person to have crafted an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II for Common Wealth coins. Around her right facing profile, “Elizabeth II”, “DG REG FD”, and “100 pounds” are inscribed.

The reverse depicts the emblematic Britannia, a greek deity representing Great Britain, looking out over the ocean to defend herself against any threats. Britannia is armed with a trident while in her other hand she holds an olive branch and supports a Union Jack-adorned shield symbolizing sovereignty over Britain’s water. The inscriptions “BRITANNIA”, “1 oz 999.9 FINE Gold” can also be seen on the reverse side of the 1 oz British Britannia Gold Coin.
